Why neurodiversity matters for leaders

One in five people are neurodivergent - they think, feel, sense, and process information differently than neurotypical brains. Although they may not be talking openly about their differences in your workplace - at least not yet - neurodivergent people are likely already part of your teams.

They have exceptional strengths and offer cognitive diversity to teams - which is increasingly important to solve today's more complex problems.

Traditional leadership approaches and ways of working often create invisible barriers for neurodivergent people, impacting their performance and wellbeing. At the team level, this results in many of the common challenges that leaders are faced with, and missed opportunities for greater innovation, productivity, team effectiveness.

Do any of these challenges sound familiar?

  • Lack of Innovation or Low Productivity: Frustration that the team have been doing things in the same way for so long, and it feels so unproductive.

  • Group think: Everyone agreeing with each other, and no real creativity in solving problems.

  • Inconsistent Performance Issues: Talented employees sometimes struggling to meet deadlines or expectations.

  • Communication Breakdowns: Misunderstandings arising from different processing or communication styles.

  • Team Member Differences: Tension between team members who clearly have different ways of working or thinking about things.

  • Burnout and Overwhelm: Employees showing stress or mental health issues, but the solution is unclear.

  • Retention Challenges: Difficulty retaining skilled talent who potentially feel unsupported or misunderstood.

  • Uncertainty After Disclosure: Feeling unsure how to talk about neurodiversity, or provide support effectively after someone shares their neurodivergent condition.

These are the signs that greater awareness and more neuroinclusive leadership practices may be needed at the team level.

Kim Herrick, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion - Contact Energy

"Both Jen & Jenny did a brilliant job helping us learn more about Neurodiversity. It is a tricky topic, and they used personas, storytelling and personal examples to bring the content to life. I learnt about the different types of Neurodiversity and how they are interconnected. Most importantly I learnt how to work more effectively with people who identify as ADHD, Dyslexic and Autistic, and the language that is appropriate with neurodiverse people.

I really liked that Jenny shared her personal story and lived experience. I am positive there will be lots of people who can relate to her story and the challenges she has faced in her career.  I highly recommend this workshop to anyone working with neurodivergent people."
