Why Neurodiversity Matters to Your Organisation

Did you know that approximately 1 in 5 people are neurodivergent? With conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia, and autism, they think, feel, sense, process information, and communicate differently. They likely are already part of your teams, even if many aren't openly talking about their differences.

While neurodivergence can bring incredible strengths like divergent thinking, hyperfocus, and creative problem-solving, traditional work practices and team cultures often present invisible barriers for neurodivergent people, reducing their effectiveness and impacting their wellbeing.

These challenges also mean that teams and organisations may not be benefiting from the proven returns that embracing cognitive diversity in teams can bring.

Common organisational challenges include:

  • Communication Breakdowns: Misunderstandings and conflicts due to differing cognitive and communication styles.

  • Low Engagement and Productivity: Employees feeling misunderstood or under-supported, leading to lower motivation and performance.

  • Increased Burnout and Stress: Neurodivergent employees often experience greater stress from sensory or cognitive overload.

  • Retention Risks: Losing valuable talent who feel unseen, misunderstood, or unsupported.

  • Limited Innovation: Missing out on diverse perspectives and innovative thinking due to lack of awareness and inclusivity.

Addressing these challenges is key to unlocking the full potential of your workforce.

"When 30% of our staff self-identified as neurodivergent in our latest DEI survey, we knew that creating the environment where our neurodivergent employees feel safe to bring their whole selves to work was essential for our culture.

The first step to neuroinclusion in the workplace is understanding of neurodiversity, and that’s where Jenny Turner of the Human Fabric came in. Jenny ran one-hour workshop, which covered business, ethical and future cases for neurodiversity and asked some incisive questions, which are already resulting in meaningful conversations. Thank you, Jenny and Human Fabric."
